Swinging magpie

Somebody was enjoying themself on the rope hanging from our old playground swing set this morning.

The technique is to land on the rope and worry the frayed end for a bit. When it's been sufficiently beaked about you then swing upside down on it for a while.  After a good swing, including testing out various poses and positions, you then eventually drop off and glide to the ground.  There seems to be no point to the exercise except the fun of having a swing - and what more point do you need?

A previous enthusiast for the same trick actually wore away the entire frayed end leaving just a cropped knot. So I undid a loop last year in case a new exponent of the art came along. And this morning they did.  And its foot definitely isn't caught in the rope, and I didn't (as my friend teased me) glue it to the rope just to get the shot.  ;-)

Very grainy pics as I had the wrong lens on for a distance shot, so they're pretty severely cropped.

Me too Devster. Some birds really do seem to have a sense of fun.  smiley    A few minutes earlier that same magpie, who is a real character, was playing a game of "Run Rings Round the Galah" or perhaps "Stir Up the Galah" whereby you score a win if you can get it to flap its wings.  Success on this occasion.

Very intelligent and playful bird. Magpie is one of only 10 animals that have been proven to have any measurable degree of self awareness. This has been determined scientifically using the mirror test. Pretty amazing.
