I heard some tapping on my office window and then the loungeroom window. I went to see what it was and this bird was flying from a tree to the window and back again. Not sure if it was trying to get insects out of spiderwebs or if the reflection was what interested it. Not seen one of these before and can't find it on the bird finder with the criteria I was using - small, approx mynah bird size, long tail, with crest and brown in colour. Makes a kind of chk chk chk sound. Not heard it before.
Followed it around but couldn't get good clear shots as it was frequently hidden by leaves and a multitude of branches.
Would love to know what it is please.
Looks like Mrs Whipbird to me.
Cool! I've never seen a whipbird although I've heard them lots. I always went looking but didn't know what they looked like and they were always hidden in the trees. How awesome is that?

Extremely awesome, I would think, kathie. It's wonderful when something turns up that you know is there but have never seen before. Great that you were able to take a shot or two, too.
Yes, funny thing is I've never actually heard them around here before. Up the hill and at Sherbrooke I have, and other places, but not actually at home. It headed off towards my neighbour's place after it got sick of me following it around for awhile. Hope it comes back, and its mate.

When you posted the photo what was your gut feeling the bird may be Kathiemt ?
Just curios.
Cheers Beef.
O Kathie, how lucky you are!!!!!! I think this is a Baby Eastern Whipbird, because it doesn't have the white cheek stripes. I have them around my house, but have only ever seen one. They are extremely shy, and mostly forage in the dark undergrowth. Look afte it and make sure it doesn't get attacked by any cats.
M-L
I had no idea Beef. I just entered what I could see about it in the bird finder but wasn't successful.
Yes M-L, I'll keep an eye out for it. Our cats weren't around at the time and were lazily sleeping in the sun somewhere. But it is the first time I've seen one here so if it's a young one the parents must be around. Funny I've never heard their call.

How very lucky you were to have this little one visit and to manage a photograph. Usually they are off into the brush as soon as they see or hear you.
It hasn't come back today although I'm sure I heard a similar sound on the window the day before. But then, I've been in and out today. Anyway, here are some more shots I got of it on that day. Hoping it will come back so I can be more prepared for getting better shots.
Wish I could have gotten shots of it on our window but it moved there so quickly and I had my long lens on. I didn't have time to retreat away from the window to get a clear shot. It was up too close.
