Tassie Election

It seems that the majority of Tassie folk want to see the trees cut downsad

It happened while thousands and thousands of people, including me, went on "the March in March " here in Melbourne.

When are people waking up to reality? Hope not when it's too late??

Drat. Looks like were heading for a whitewash (or bluewash). Sad thing is, most of the state Liberal victories aren't due to state policy, they're because of the unpopularity of Federal Labor over the past few years.

Heads up folks & cast despair into the bin. While it's easy to wither in the face of what is going on environmentally at state & federal levels we need to keep hope alive & save our energy for bigger things than wailing & gnashing our teeth, not to mention putting on sackcloth & ashes.

Both major parties & many of the minor parties show that we can't rely on governments to protect & restore the natural environment. In fact, currently it's quite the opposite. Be environmental, do environmental & never toss in the towel. Respond to the nincompoops wrecking our environment & our long-term economy by joining a local bush care or Landcare group, restoring the natural environment in our backyards & being a model environmental citizen. And seize opportunities like the March in March to demonstrate to the environment wreckers that they aren't the only ones who live in Australia.

Any Country where the “Shooters Party” has enough voters to hold the “ balance of power’, has serious issues ??

I think Tassie folk are just tired of the Greens. The party needs a large dose of pragmatism if it is to prosper. It should stick to environmental matters and stop wasting time on unpopular socialist left causes. It should work harder to find compromise with the timber industry, because if it doesn't the "all or nothing" stance will work in reverse. The environmental cause must have the support of the community. That is the imperative, particularly in a climate of government apathy to the environment.

I reckon we need a new conservation party, as said the Greens have only succeeded in continuing to marginalise themselves in the general public eye by espousing any leftist cause.

The problem isn't the Greens, their policies are actually fairly coherent. Problem is Labor and the Liberals have managed to cast them as being fringe nut jobs. They aren't, but they're so small it's hard to for them to combat comments of the major parties.

Plus, the public view of the current economic conditions doesn't help. People feel threatened economically, and are less likely to support something which has been cast by the majority as extravagant. For many, environmental conservation is only a bonus...

Greens policy may well be coherent ie consistent, but with what? The environment needs a focussed defender, not a mis-named party that attracts general hostility from the community by pursuing very unpopular non-environmental issues eg relaxed border protection. But I've had my say on this, and I'll say no more.

A brief note, Night Parrot: I hardly think there's government apathy to the environment. It's down-right hostility towards the environment if you ask me. If ever there was a case of biting the hand that feeds us then we're staring it right in the face.

The other point I'd make is that it's not the Greens who are radical although they're painted as such by many people. What could be more radical than destroying a planet? The Greens are really the conservatives. It's the major parties who are the radical ratbags.

The Greens went down the 'S'bend when Bob Brown retired, although I didn't agree with Bob on some issues he had a pretty good grasp of most issues concerning the preservation of wild life and their habitat...wink

Sarah Hanson Young has done more damage to the Greens like no other, they can thank her for a rapid decline in popularity.

Australian electoral reform is badly needed, too many wingnuts, dills and nutters can register a party at both state and federal elections and actually get a seat by doing cosy deals and sharing/shifting preferences when they actually only received a handful of votes...it stinks.

The one with the most votes and thus first over the line should the elected person, not some blow in who has done some wheeling and dealing behind the scenes.sad
