What is this bird?

We have seen this bird in our garden a lot. Can anyone tell us what it is? I know the picture is not great but it is a very timid bird so had to zoom from a fair distance.

Yes Nathan, I'm 100% sure , you are right, this IS a Buff-banded Rail. I so wish I had one in my garden. How lucky you are Trudy.

Thanks Araminta &  Nathan. It certainly seems to be but it seems to be a bit out of its element because the Buff Banded Rail is a water bird but there are no ponds or bodies of water in our garden. In the last 2 years we have had regular rain which is unusual for us. We are on a farm and have a creek, which at present has been running continuously for about 18 months, at the bottom of the hill we live on. Perhaps he wanders up from there.

How VERY lucky you are ,boydfamily, they are a very shy bird and can run very fast to hide. Not sure wheather they should be fed bird mix ? Sorry, but in my view wild birds should be left wild. I would love to have some on my property.

They don't necessarily live just next to water courses. I've seen them in parks etc. Generally not far from water though.

What kind of wildbird mix? Home made or from a produce store?

Hi there boydfamily. I love your love of the buff-banded rail & I certainly encourage you to be part of the Birds in Backyards group. But could I also encourage you to consider for whom or what you're putting out the bird seed? I very much support Araminta's comment about allowing birds to be left wild. Before we artificially feed birds we need to ask ourselves for whom or what is the feeding. In most cases, I'd suggest, it's so that humans can watch the birds rather than for the birds' well-being. If you wish to benefit birds while at the same time enjoy watching them could I suggest that you establish their natural habitats, as you may well being doing already.

I very much doubt that you could feed these birds anyway as they eat worms, insects etc. Ray

Not sure if images are going to exceed this Forums standards.

The pair are around all year. We have a tidal creek next to our poperty plus also plenty of fresh water in a small fish pond and from run off

Pity. I couldn't get on the rails using your link, jackdrake. However, you seem to have some really good rail habitat in your location. What other bird species do you see?
