This bird is very small and is living on our country block on the coast of NSW. This little guy is sitting on a couple of small specale eggs just on the ground!

So there is no real way to tell female to male? I was just trying to find that out this one is on its own with two eggs!
So there is no real way to tell male to female? This one is on its own as far as we can tell with two eggs!
my Slater guide says 'Nesting: small scrape in sand or among stones, sometimes well away from water; ....'
also have you noticed that she/he is not always sitting on the eggs, if so this is most likely the changeover from 1 to the other, sitter would vacate the nest and move away and then soon after the next sitter arrives
