Whistling kite eating

I saw something new yesterday. A whistling kite landed on a post with a big chunk of meat (roadkill?). It whistled, which was a lovely sound. I wonder if it was calling its mate to share?

It's mate flew in. I think the secons one is the female because it looks bigger to me.

The first one (male) flew away, taking a snack with it.

The second one settled on the post and ate for quite a long time.

I tried to get a photo of it pulling up the meat.

One whistling kite was flying with the meat and a raven came in to try and take it.

I decided it was time to pack up. I put the camera away completely in its case then in a bag then stacked my camo gear on top of it. I looked out the window and a wedge-tailed eagle was flying towards me. I pulled the camera out again and looked up ... and the wedge-tailed eagle was gone. I waited and it came back, but it was quite a way away.

Ravens chased it

And this whistling kite seemed to be chasing it away too.

What an experience, I wish I could see something as exciting as that. I'm lost for words to describe how wonderful this is, great work Kim.

(I have one request,I want to see a photo of you in your camo gear please)

It is great. I never get tired of seeing them and I never know what will fly over. Sometimes nothing, sometimes 5 different species. Did you see the lovely immature WBSE I got the other day? Teh markings are so beautiful.

White-bellied sea-eagle and whistling kite I don't have a photo of my t-shirt and my family probably don't want anyone to see me in it either! I have had scathing comments from one of them about how I look in it! I have a photo of me in my jacket. I'll email it to you if you like, but not put it on here.

Yes thanks, I've been looking for some camouflage gear. The neighbours will know it's me though, there is only one idiot like me where I live.

Oh, to get pics like these.  Only once have I been close to a pair of wedgetails, flying so close above me I thought for a minute they were going to attack.  But no, they were just going on their way.  Such magnificence!  And me without a camera.

Great shots Birdgirl, you need to get a Ghillie suit, no one will see you then.

I surprised that raven may attacks even kites. Excellent moments and pics, Birdgirl2009!

That would probably scare everyone that saw me and I'd get a reputation as a 'local identity'

I think it helps, although they have fantastic eyesight. Sometimes when they see me they become curious and fly in circles around me to try and work out what I am

The second last one is a raven flying after the wedge-tailed eagle, which is even bigger than the kite. They try to make them drop their food, and succeed sometimes
