coincidentally I did a Hardhead study at Redcliffe in July looking for a pic where the white feathers on the rear were visible (this pic extracted from RAW, cropped)
I thought so too Peter, but there was something strange going on then, because the male Hardhead in the photo attacked every male Chestnut Teal that came anywhere near this girl. It was quite obvious she was "his girl". Goes that happen? Or is that unusual?
I'll have a look at my photos, I might have one of him attacking a Teal.
I don't have one Peter, sorry. But this is him getting up to have a go at the male Teal. I must have deleted them, those attacks happen so quickly, hard to take photos of.
a great pic Araminta

thanks, I just like that white patch showing - (show call me anal)
your her above is, I believe, a Chestnut Teal duck
the Hardhead duck is like the drake but with a dark eye as below

I do not know if Hardhead and Chestnut Teal crossbreed but it would be interesting to monitor for any ducklings
Peter
Good pics and story to go with.

Brisbane southside.
I like your photos and the story is very interesting. Maybe they can interbreed - some ducks do. Are you going to watch for ducklings?
I do go regularly to the lake to check if it has been cleaned. I will see if they produce any offspring.
M-L
ok. keep us posted
