Hi, I recorded the spotted pardalote in March a few weeks back. I've read this bird is most abundant in April. Why haven't I heard it again from my backyard in northern Sydney ?

an entire array of factors could be manifesting
in particular the suitability of your area to support the species, in marginal habitat birds are less frequent and reliable.
In my area E of Melb the Spotted Pardalotes are resident in suitable habitat such as reserves, in autumn-winter they disperse/migrate to/over marginal open habitat including suburbia with a few native trees.
in any case i wouldn't rely 100% on a supposed date of the year on which a bird is supposed to arrive/increase in numbers (birds don't necessarily read the field guides/ornithological notes).
Lets hope you hear them again soon.
In my experience they only peep for a relatively short time each year, so if you heard them a few weeks ago, it might be past peep-time. On the other hand, the weather might be a factor as well.... or they might be busy elsewhere.
I have seen these birds in at least my last 3 properties, but only for a relatively brief period each time.

Thanks soakes. I'm glad I managed to get a great recording then.
btw I love your word "peep", very appropriate.
I heard some peeping just yesterday in Olinda :)

Hi Zosterops
Sorry I missed your great answer until now. I live in surburbia so it makes sense that I have been hearing it less.
Hi Soakes
Lucky you ! I do miss the peep.
INteresting about peeping only at certain times of the year. While I am not a list keeper or take more notice than just observe, I am out and about enough all year around and do hear Spotted Pardalotes often enough to be confident in saying they call regulalry throughout the year. And they do have a number of slightly different vocalizations, so it is possible not to notice the typical peeping calls at times.
Hi Canonguy, this is going to make it difficult for me, as a non-expert, to recognise the spotted pardalote's various calls. Thanks for your insight.
