thanks for bringing this to our attention; to make sense of it I said 1 hectare = 100 m x 100 m = 10,000 sq m; and 1 chook per square metre is hardly free range in any definition; actually can you imagine a 1 hectare paddock with 10,000 chooks in it
Not a Queenslander, but without support this will spread, so have signed as a concerned Australian. Yes chickens are birds, and they deserve to live to a better standard than this. We do eat chicken and eggs, but try to choose carefully from suppliers who have a reputation for being humane.
Me too. And I hope everyone has sent Campbell Newman an email about his policy of allowing cattle to destroy national parks. Ms Woko & I have cancelled plans to visit Queensland & NSW national parks for fear of being trampled or shot respectively.
I always feel sorry for the chooks, knowing how they love to scratch around and explore new territory. I guess the "free range" chooks of today are better off than abused battery hens or sardine-barn hens but there are always cheats around. People can help by not scrimping when it comes to buying eggs and only buying those brands that they KNOW come from real free range farms. Probably double the average cost but isn't a few dollars over a lifetime worth the satisfaction of knowing that one has saved a bird from abuse? And if the price looks just too dear, maybe one should think about eating less eggs to even out the price. Its not as if they are really good for you. Doesn't one egg contain a whole day's worth of cholesterol? And don't they increase the risk of diabetes? The same goes for chicken meat. I have turned off it since seeing how the meat is grown and prepared. I am not a vegan (nor a vegetarian) but I see their point.
Your post made me even think more about this, we thought progress was made in the way we treat animals. I think we have fallen asleep at the wheel In the early 80ies I was part of a group that freed battery hens in the middle of the night. If we don't step on people's toes hard enough (again), greed will make some people break the law.
Out here where I live you find people that have chooks will put eggs outside for sale. My daughter has only 4 chooks, that's too many eggs to eat herself. She gives them away to friends. But the guy that puts them out the front of his house sells them at the same prize the supermarket does.
Chooks or not, too right it's disgusting. Signed! We have four pampered free rangers - not many, but enough so I NEVER have to buy eggs from the supermarket. Must tell them how good they have it next time they decide to go off-the-lay
Signed,M-L. Even though they ARE chickens,10,000 per hectare is pretty bad - 667% increase.

Hi Araminta. I just google the politician's name (in this case Campbell Newman) & that takes me directly to an email page.
