bell bird altercation

As you may have gathered we are in Eden to see the whales.  Went on the boat trip yesterday and it was fantastic, we saw heaps of whales.  Lots of photos naturally.  Anyhow there are lots of bell birds around where we are staying and I had never seen one before.  They are hard to spot and are highup in the trees and a dull green colour so hard to see.  Finally got a couple of shots when suddenly there was a huge commotion and a flurry of wings and right in front of me a dispute between 2 bell birds being egged on by aanother 4 or 5 birds.  It went on for quite a few minute sand even became airborne.  They are very sad looking birds up close.

Thought I would share with you

Fantastic!  Well not fantastic for the squabble or loser obviously, but great series of action shots Diane.  They are quite scruffy looking individuals aren't they laugh, although I suppose anyone would look that way after a scuffle smiley  I've never seen one before, what lovely vibrant legs & beaks they have though.

All that apparent squabbling & fighting may well be part of the ritual of establishing relationships & hierarchies within bell bird families/communities & important for the survival of the species.

I wonder if the one who loses tells the others he really got his bell rung. devil
