corvid crisis

This scruffy young corvid has me a bit stumped. Torresian Crow, Australian Raven and Forest Raven are all possibilities at this location (Myall Lakes NP, NSW). I think i remember the call being lower than that of the TC, which I am most familiar with out of the 3, but I can't trust my memory enough to make a positive ID from the call alone. The thickset bill and long legs had me thinking FR, but my research tells me that the visible white at the base of the neck feathers is indicative of TC. Would love a 2nd/3rd/4th opinion on this one...

I would say your research is leading you down the right path. Although I can't quite put my finger on why, this bird just gives off the vibe of being a crow from first sight.

I think Torresian Crow has a distinctive pale blue eye, so I'd be steering away from that myself.

All AU corvids have a quite distinctive white/pale blue eye at full maturity, but their young also all have brown eyes (which usually remains for the first year of their life at least).

Thanks Amateur, I had no idea of that. Good to know.

Bill size to me suggests FR.

Know little about corvids, but what about Little Raven, Morcombe says "hidden base of grey feathers may show at the nape". Also are there fine throat hackles just visible! Certainly no expert. Forest Raven has a fairly limited range in Northern NSW and Southern Queensland. Anyway, maybe someone with more expertise than I will turn up!

A bit out of range for Little Raven. Not impossible but very unlikely. Forest Raven known to occur along the coast from about where this photo was taken (Hawk's Nest) to Coffs Harbour and inland to Armidale. I think this one might remain in the too hard basket!
