Hi I am planning a holiday later in the year. I would like to go to a place within Australia where I can observe and photograph birds that I don't normally see. I live in Gippsland Victoria.
I was wondering if we could have a forum topic on places that people have enjoyed or felt were productive whilst observing birds.
Currently I have two places on my list of possibilities, Fog Dam out of Darwin and the Mareeba Wetlands out of Cairns.

The Coorong at the mouth of the Murray River.
Goolwa is the town to stay in, where you have access to The Coorong, the River itself or the lakes.
You can drive to the mouth of the Murray along the beach if you have a four wheel drive vehicle.
Lots of local and migratory birds use the Coorong wetlands, which stretch from Goolwa along the coast down towards the Southeast of South Australia.
Check out the website - www.thecoorong.com - lots of information there.
We like it - usually spend Christmas down that way visiting relatives.
Does this inclue all over Australia? If so,you should go to the GSW corner of W.A. - It's glorious around winter/spring time, with thick Jarrah,Marri and Karri forests and plenty of birds(including endemic ones) everywhere you go. You could travel south-east a little bit and look for the Noisy Scrub-bird near Albany - if you havn't heard about it it had been presumed extinct, until a population was found living at Two Peoples Bay next to Albany. Otherwise, the area around Pemberton/Manjimup has plenty of Western Rosellas,Red-eared firetails,Splendid Fairy-wrens and often Carnaby's Cockatoo's.
Ro, try to get hold of the book Where to Find Birds in Australia by John Bransbury, published by Hutchinson Australia.
Thanks Woko that sounds great, I will do a search for it.

Thanks to NathanY and ChrisF for your suggestions. As a child I loved the movie Storm Boy which I believe
was set in the Coorong. I lived in Perth for two years when I was young but didn't get as far south as Pemberton/Manjimup
and both could be great destinations.
a good book, I got my 2d hand copy from www.AndrewIsles.com
