Hi all
This bird visited the deck this morning for the first time. Far south coast of nsw, close to water, wet thick forest. It has a loud call, similar to that of the olive-backed oriole on this site, but added a 'magpie' warble to the end of the call. It didn't have a 'reddish bill' as mentioned here on the site so I'm not sure .. ?
What do you think? (sorry about the quality of the pics)
Ron
What do you think about a young grey butcherbird, rgract?
Thanks Woko .. could be, could be.
It had the stance and bearing of a kingfisher so fits with that. I couldn't get a close enough photo to see if it had a hook on its upper beak but I'll know what to look for if I see it again. With birds that can mimic other birds it can be difficult to rely on their call.
Ron
I believe it is a young Grey Butcherbird as well, Ron.
Curtis
Thanks Curtis. Yes, I'm pretty much thinking the same now. I even remember thinking 'that's a lot like a small kookaburra' at one point when I was watching it. I'm looking forward to seeing it again so I can confirm the ID.
Ron
another vote for Grey Butcherbird, acouple more and we could win the election
