Been thinking or what to do for the June holidays and my sons Birthday. He'd like to visit the desert again and I can't disagree. But we have also done it a few times so maybe just a little this time. Been looking at visiting the Diamantina Lakes in the channel country of Central West Qld. We have lightly touched Welford NP on the Barcoo River and found it very relaxing and interesting. One couId not ignore the bird life but I was not that attentive last time. Will take the peepers this time. Also like to take the canoe this time for some dusk/dawn paddles.
What I'm really seeking is any knowlwdge on the Lake Machattie Area west of Bedourie. It comprises of three lakes Machattie, Mipia, and Koolivoo. I beleive the Koolivoo dries up but the other should be ok to paddle. Anywhere out there with water is a bird magnet, but seeking knowledge of any access routes or contacts. If anyone has a phone number and willing to share, PM me please, don't post it up. Same with traversing private land. I see roads on maps which I assume would be gated.
thanks

Jason, the nice people at the Bedourie Information Centre seemed good in July '14 when I went through on the Grasswren Tour.http://www.thediamantina.com.au/
