I've been here before asking to identify a super annoying and constant bird call at night in sydneys spring (turns out it was the common koel) but I'm back with another annoying call!
we live next to a park in Liverpool nsw, that plays host to all sorts of birds..but ever since mid September, at 4am without fail a symphony starts... Of possibly 3+ birds. And finishes about an hour later as dawn approaches and the usual bird calls begin. I know its extremely difficult without pictures or audio, but I thought someone might be savvy enough to just know who the culprit is.
its a monotonous, repetitive "woo-woo. Woo-woo. Woo-woo. Woo-woo" usually in a sequence of 4 and depending on the bird it varies in pitch. Its almost rhythmic like a summer crickets / cicadas chirp .... But in bird form. Lol. I don't know, I'm pregnant, these things have woken me up every night at 4am for almost 2 weeks. I feel like I'm going crazy. Any suggestions are welcome
All I can think of are Bronzewings.
But what ever they are, you will have to live with it Knowing what it is, will not stop them from calling to their friends.
They are most likely looking for partners to have babies with Once they found some, it will stop.
(it's good practice for you, you will wake up a lot more often during the night once your Baby is borne. I know , I had two of them. But things will get better after a while. Good luck)

Does it sound like a Tawny Frogmouth?

Tawny would have been my thought too Nathan
Powerful owls also give double hoot calls but they wouldn't be ramping up calling at this time of year
Argh, neither sound similar. Its probably my horrible description haha. I'll have to get out there tomorrow morning and record it!
I know I can't stop it and will have to wait out all of spring lol, but as was the case with the koel, finding out what it was and reading up on it helped us be patient and understanding.
I haven't yet heard anything remotely similar in the area during the day either!
Maybe a Southern Boobook? If it's not,I think I'm out of ideas..
Are koels in Sydney yet? They make a woop-woop sort of noise.
Maybe a wonga pigeon? Cheers Beef. Try the youtube link! http://youtu.be/FOUpQhtYg3Y
Nathan, Boobooks make a sound like the European cockoo, strangely enough. When I came to Australia, at first I thought, how odd
it was for the cuckoo to call at night. Boobooks go Cookoo Cookoo
I'd still go Pigeon like Beef, or Bronzewing.

Or perhaps a Pheasant Coucal?
That's interesting, Bellamy. It seems that if you know what's making the call & something about the caller then it's easier to tolerate - & maybe easier to sleep by. Another study for an aspiring ecopsychologist!
May your pregnancy be fruitful!
Thanks all for the suggestions!
Wouldnt you know it, I planned on recording them this morning and not only were they later than usual... But also quieter and only called for 20 or so minutes!
I got what I could, so take a listen.

Obviously our resident Koel is in there as well. But I'm more interested in the 3 or so different "pulsing" calls. Thanks!
Maybe it's a curlew, they call in the early morning.
It's possible that the "tweet-tweet" series of calls are just Noisy Miners.
I've heard similar calls from them at my place early in the morning over the last few days, along with the very lovely (but very very early) pre-dawn Pied Butcherbird calls.
Cheers

I thought it was similar to miners too! But didnt think they had any real "call" ... just ... noise haha. Definitely hear them of a day in large numbers. They swoop my dog every time we play fetch lol
There you go, Bellemy. Already your increased understanding of whatever it is that's calling is working!
Timmo. Right noise miners
See it! Hear it!
Mid-North Coast NSW
Do you know if there are any Masked Lapwings (plovers) in the area? My observations are that when they become distressed by the presence of a predator at night they make a noise similar to that.
