Seen Wed 27th March 2013 Palymyra Perth Western Australia
I thought it was a 'stained' laughing dove but then I saw a pair of them so not an accident.
Shame i only had my phone with me and I apologise for the poor quality
I cannot find this bird on google. maybe something introduced or escaped captive bird?
thanks for looking :)
Birdomo, it looks like a pigeon but what species I don't know. I checked my field guide (Michael Morcombe: Field Guide to Australian Birds) & the nearest thing to it that I could see is a feral pigeon. Do you have those pests in Perth?
It looks far too rotund for a laughing turtle-dove. Perhaps some Perth posters might be able to help.
It looks like the feral pigeon to me,I live in Perth as well and we most definitely have them here.
Like Nathan and Woko, I think it's a feral pigeon, something like a Rock Dove .

You're all probably right but I've never seen a feral pigeon this colouring, they were pale brown with dark brown hood and dark splotch on back.
And unlike the rock doves i found on wiki the wings are light coloured
I'd really like to say it's not a Rock Dove but I can't think what else it could be. Their colours and markings vary greatly but I've never seen any coloured like this either and I can't see anything remotely similar in the field guides, including known vagrants.

Have a look at the pigeon Shorty posted under "Birds of the week" introduced birds. What ever it's called, I think that's what it is. I think the colours in photos can be changed by so many influences that make then appear different.
there are many sites you can google, like Racing Pigeons....you will find lots of photos there.

My Pigeon shot is actually a Rock Dove. I did rename it in my Flickr but the new name didn't come across to here.I should have refreshed my page before copying to here.

don't get too hung up on the colour as pigeons can in a very wide variety of colours, shapes and feather types

Ah yeah some sort of 'homing pigeon' probably stopped for a feed or escaped.
thanks everyone :)
I'm still (almost) certain it is a "Rock Dove" just like Shorty's pigeon .
