water bird id ?

I saw a pair of birds today along the greenway canal inner west Sydney.  A water bird or wader, a large one i think, light grey, with a white face, a noticeably long bill, orange legs.  The head had a look of being squashed a bit, and there was a black tail feather.  They were sitting in a way that was straight up and down if that makes any sense.  It had a long neck when stretched but just sitting it was tucked in.  I don't know the colour of the breast.

Thank you!

Yes, thank you it was.  They are apparently very common, but i hadn't seen one before, and especially didn't expect it at the storm water drains.

But it is also a council created greenway corridor, so maybe it is doing it's job.
