I saw a pair of birds today along the greenway canal inner west Sydney. A water bird or wader, a large one i think, light grey, with a white face, a noticeably long bill, orange legs. The head had a look of being squashed a bit, and there was a black tail feather. They were sitting in a way that was straight up and down if that makes any sense. It had a long neck when stretched but just sitting it was tucked in. I don't know the colour of the breast.

Yes, thank you it was. They are apparently very common, but i hadn't seen one before, and especially didn't expect it at the storm water drains.
But it is also a council created greenway corridor, so maybe it is doing it's job.
