Saw these two small birds on a pier at mt henry bridge, Perth
I was standing less than 3m away and thought I would be able to identify from memory,
but despite all evening searching cannot find a match.
Closest I can find is welcome sparrow. A very good match on the black colouring; black back of head, back nape, top wings. but throat forehead and chest where all same colour grey (not sure how to describe maybe slighty green/brown dirty grey) anyway definitely NOT rusty red. Also short triangular beak was orange not black.
I did not see belly colour or if they had forked tail .
I thought could have be escapees except they were in a pair and another observer said they are regulars at that spot.
Maybe just a variation of plumage and beak and a welcome swallow still?
Any thoughts?
thanks,
Check Fairy Martin, birdomo. They build nests under bridges & culverts.
Or could be a juvenile/immature welcome swallow

Thanks for the hints!
I checked all photos on welcome swallow, tree martin, fairy martin but none seem to fit, maybe an escaped finch but beak not big enough for that I think.
I also looked at all swallows, swifts, martins, finches that I can find pictures of online but cannot find a match.
I will take a camera next time but might be some times months before get lucky.
